Woodland Walk

Central to all the East Lothian Burns attractions are the monument on the Haddington to Bolton road and the family well some 90 metres to its northeast. Both sites attract a considerable number of visitors and this will no doubt increase now that part of the original cottage has been exposed. Safe car parking exists only adjacent to the monument and visitors to the well have had traditionally to walk along the busy public highway to get there. This is deemed to be unsatisfactory and indeed, unsafe.
A crucial aim of the project group has been to create a safe, aesthetic woodland walkway, well away from the busy road and much nearer to the route taken by Agnes Broun as she carried the family's water supply.
The walkway is being created by individuals serving a community service order as an alternative to prison and cuts through an area of natural, native woodland of considerable beauty. The careful, sensitive management of the walkway and its immediate surroundings should add to the biodiversity of the woodland and encourage increased use of the countryside by locals and visitors alike.
At either end of the walkway state of the art communication boards will be erected at a wheelchair friendly height to ensure that anyone visiting the site will have a meaningful experience whether or not they are able or choose to go on the entire route.
It is hoped that in the near future, this walkway will be linked to an existing right of way leading from the county town of Haddington thus opening up a number of alternative routes for walkers of various levels.
